Journey through time at Louvre Abu Dhabi. See 600+ treasures, from mummified pharaohs to Babylonian sculptures, all under an architectural masterpiece designed by Pritzker Prize-laureate Jean Nouvel.
Unlike most Louvre branches, the Louvre Abu Dhabi is the product of a 30-year agreement between France and the United Arab Emirates. This unique partnership allows for exhibitions and loan programs featuring works from 17 French museums.
The museum's iconic dome appears to float weightlessly above the galleries. However, this engineering marvel is actually supported by four massive hidden piers. Each pier is 10 meters wide and extends 30 meters below sea level, ensuring stability despite the complex geometric latticework of the dome.
The intricate geometric pattern of the dome is more than just aesthetically pleasing. It acts as a giant "mashrabiya," a traditional Arabic lattice screen. Sunlight filters through the dome's 8,000 metallic stars, casting a mesmerizing and ever-changing "Rain of Light" effect onto the galleries below, blurring the lines between the interior and exterior spaces.
Louvre Abu Dhabi is just the first phase of a larger cultural development project on Saadiyat Island.
The museum boasts the "Ur-III Tablet," a seemingly mundane yet historically significant clay tablet dating back to 3700 BCE. Considered the world's oldest known cuneiform tablet, it meticulously details economic transactions involving grain, fish, and oil.
