About Musee de L'Orangerie
Musee de L'Orangerie is for all you art connoisseurs! From the vibrant strokes of Henri Matisse to the avant-garde visions of Amedeo Modigliani, the museum is home to remarkable art pieces. The jewel of the museum though is the monumental "Water Lilies" series by Monet. Its compact size allows for a personal and immersive art experience, making it a must-visit.
Pierre-Auguste Renoir, a dear friend of Monet, gifted one of his paintings, "Bathers with a Crab," to the French state on the condition that it be displayed at Musée de l'Orangerie. The painting is now part of the museum's collection.
The Water Lilies series at Musée de l'Orangerie was a lifelong project for Monet, and he worked on it for over 30 years until he died in 1926.
Before becoming a museum, the Orangerie hosted the Salon des Tuileries, an annual art exhibition that showcased contemporary French art. Only at the beginning of the 20th century was the Orangerie turned into an art gallery museum.
Hidden in one of Matisse's paintings at the museum are whimsically painted pianos. It's said that Matisse had a fascination with music and couldn't resist incorporating his love for it into his artwork.
The museum has a time capsule buried in its courtyard, rumored to contain sketches and personal items of the artists. It's scheduled to be opened in 2100, offering future generations a surreal glimpse into the past.
