About Museum of Mordern Art (MoMA)
World-renowned for its exhaustive collection of modern art, the Museum of Modern Art is a must-visit attraction for art-lovers traveling to New York. Here, you can find classics in contemporary art like Picasso, Matisse, Pollock, alongside works of modern artists of our times.
MoMA's remarkable growth: The Museum of Modern Art began with just eight prints and one drawing back in 1929. From these humble beginnings, it has now grown its collection to over 200,000 paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, photographs, architectural models and drawings, and design objects.
The Rockefeller connection: One of the founding patrons of the Museum of Modern Art, Abby Aldrich Rockefeller, is the daughter-in-law of John D. Rockefeller. John D. Rockefeller is widely considered the richest American and biggest philanthropist in modern history.
The MoMA own guard dog: In 1933, Don, a German Shepherd, was given to The Museum of Modern Art by Vanity Fair magazine. Don had been instituted as a guard dog at MoMA after a highly publicized burglary at the Brooklyn Museum.
Partying with MoMA PS1: Blurring the line between nightclub and art gallery, MoMA showcased soon-to-be-famous musical acts like Cyndi Lauper and R.E.M., in the early 1980s. Today, it still has this tradition going with its annual Warm Up summer music series, the Halloween Ball, and other events.
Art in a burning room: A blaze in the museum in 1958 filled the entire building filled with smoke within minutes, killing an electrician and injuring at least twenty-five people. While most of the 2,000 pieces on display emerged relatively unscathed from the fire, some pieces like Claude Monet’s Water Lilies series were completely destroyed.
