Where history meets grandeur
The National Palace of Sintra’s history dates back to the 10th or the 11th century when Sintra was under Moorish rule, making it one of Portugal’s most well-preserved landmarks. It was also almost continuously inhabited as one of the primary royal residences between the 15th and 19th centuries. Walking into the palace immediately gives you a sense of its importance in the country’s history, with every element carrying vivid stories of the country’s monarchy and power.
An architectural time capsule
This UNESCO World Heritage Site features a blend of various styles, including Gothic, Manueline, and Moorish styles. The Swan Room, for instance, stands out for its swan motifs painted on the ceiling. Similarly, the stunning Palatine Chapel, restored in the 20th century, features one of the finest specimens of Mudejar architecture — an intricately carved hardwood ceiling that represents the starry sky. Every room you walk through offers a visual explosion of color and design that you’ll remember for years.
