Makkelijk om kaartjes te boeken, maar we wisten niet zeker of dit voor de boot naar Chateau d'If was of voor de ingang van het eiland. Het bleek voor de ingang van het eiland te zijn. De prijs was heel redelijk. De boottocht naar Chateau d'If duurde 20 minuten. Prachtig blauw water van de Middellandse Zee, fantastisch. Het eiland is erg klein maar interessant. Ik was vooral geïnteresseerd in de graaf van Monte Cristo, een fictief personage, maar er was een cel gemaakt voor de graaf in het kasteel; en er waren gedenkplaten van de echte mensen die daar gevangen zaten. Absoluut geweldig. We dronken wat in het café, wat erg leuk was, en daarna maakten we een wandeling over het eiland. Het was een absoluut geweldige dag en we zouden het zo weer doen, als we ooit weer naar Marseille gaan. Gewoon geweldig xx

Hoewel ik eerst in de oude haven te horen kreeg dat het weer niet goed was om erheen te gaan, en ook de volgende dag, toen ik mijn kaartje al had gekocht om erheen te gaan, gelukkig op mijn voorlaatste dag in Marseille, de uitgang gepland stond voor 11 uur 's ochtends terwijl de website slecht weer aankondigde (alweer), ging ik erheen en had ik een goede ervaring, de eerste keer dat ik over de plek hoorde was in het boek van Alexendre Dumas, de graaf van Monte Cristo. Ik had lang niet gedacht dat ik op een dag naar het eiland zou gaan en rond het kasteel zou lopen, door de steegjes zou gaan en de kerkers zou bezoeken.

Perched upon a rocky island on the Mediterranean sits the world-renowned island fort that is Chateau d’If. Right opposite Marseille’s Vieux Port, feel surrounded by a blanket of this city’s history. Immortalized as a landmark in the famous novel from the 19th century, The Count of Monte Cristo, you don’t want to skip out on this opportunity to tour the insides.

This fort was built in 1524 as a prison by François I. With time, it gained the terrifying reputation of being the dying ground for those who resisted and opposed royal power. But the Château d’If was actually built for other noble reasons, the priority of which was given to the safety of Marseilles. Travel back in time and find yourself in the 16th century and relive scenes from the novel and movies in this iconic prison.

Please note that there is free admission during the following days: European Heritage Days on the third weekend of Sep, and every first Sunday of the month from Nov to Mar.
Entry is free for anyone under the age of 18 years, and for European Union nationals or non-EU residents in France aged between 18 and 25 years (an ID is necessary).
Entry is free for disabled guests with an accompanying adult, jobseekers (on presentation of a certificate less than 6 months old), and holders of a valid education pass.
This ticket has no audio guides available. However, you will enjoy a subtitled film screened during your visit.
All guests are required to follow the safety instructions indicated at the entrance of the monument strictly.
Please note that some spaces might remain closed for safety reasons.
The last sea shuttle towards the castle departs at 3:15 PM.
The experience is not accessible for people with mobility issues.
