Was hoping for signs that had some expla action or literature given out. It's not right to charge for audiophones when we already paid for park entrance. Oher Italian museums and sites do not do that. So it was difficult to really understand and learn about the site

I bought the tickets on the internet just 1 hour before coming but I didn't receive them right away, which worried me. They arrived maybe 30m later. Otherwise very nice site, a must see! Very interesting I do not regret

Really interesting site and so much history preserved - it wasn't busy so we didn't need the skip the line ticket but we felt more comfortable knowing we had it!

The website offered a discount for 'European citizens' for ages 18-25 which there were 5 in our party. When we arrived we discovered it is for 'European Union citizens' which does not now include us English. So we had to go back to the desk and purchase full price tickets (not allowing us to pay the difference as it was this websites error not theirs). Headout has not refunded us the difference and has struggled to understand that European and European Union are different things. Spoilt our trip when the site itself was great.

The staff at reception were very professional and pleasant. The arrival at the site was simply brilliant, as we were overlooking Herculaneum. Good directions to the site. I enjoyed the visit immensely.

A Herculean history

Believed to be of Greek origin owing to its strongly Greek Name, Herculaneum is a town that dates back to the 6th century BC. A site less busy, smaller and better preserved than Pompeii, the town is considered to be among the best preserved examples of life in the first-century. However, and no one knows why, Pompeii received all the fame and glory, whereas facts and ruins indicate that Herculaneum is in fact the more interesting, easier to navigate and better preserved site.

Headout with ease

The first thing you’re going to do is zoom past the long ticket lines and make your way into the town of Herculaneum. Located in the shadows of Mount Vesuvius, Herculaneum shares the tragic story of Pompeii. However, not everything was similar. Instead of being quickly buried in ash after the eruption, the town was destroyed 12 hours later. A 400°C wind of ash, pumice and rock rattled the town at over 100 kms/hr, essentially pausing the town in that moment.

Explore that moment preserved almost perfectly as you stroll through the site and take in visuals from over two millennia ago. See houses with upper floors intact, the majestic basilica, the marble bath houses, the large spa complex and many more infrastructural elements of this ancient Greco-Roman town. With frescos, murals, paintings, wood works and metal artifacts, you’re definitely going to improve your grasp on history.
