The Handmaid's Tale
The Handmaid's Tale
Get a glimpse of life in the (fictional) Republic of Gilead, where women's rights have been snatched away. Learn about the Handmaid, who is given the name Offred. She is one of the fertile women who is forced to reproduce with the Commanders of the Republic. The story will make you think about issues like state control and how fragile freedom is - all while Offred deals with the horror of her reality.
The opera is based on Margaret Atwood’s seminal novel, The Handmaid's Tale. The story has become famous as the novel has been made into films and a popular Emmy and BAFTA award-winning TV series. The musical score in the opera is inspired by minimalism, medieval chanting, and gospel music. Gilead's brutality is depicted in the music itself. Directed by ENO's Artistic Director Annilese Miskimmon, this power-packed production is conducted by Joana Carneiro, a contemporary music specialist. Mezzo-sopranos Kate Lindsey and Susan Bickley play Offred and her mother respectively. Soprano Rachel Nicholls is cast in the role of Aunt Lydia, whereas John Findon plays Luke.
Het Verhaal
Gilead has completely revoked the freedom and liberties of women. Fertile women, known as Handmaids, are coerced into having children with Republic Commanders. For Handmaid Offred, terror pervades every day. She rebels against the government by maintaining her individuality and self-identity. The Handmaid's Tale is a compelling story about women's rights that raises significant themes regarding power, oppression, and gender inequality. It also reveals the darker side of society and potential problems that could lead to a dystopian world and is especially relevant now.
