Start your journey from Seville to Aracena, a small town located in the middle of Sierra Morena. It offers amazing trails through its pastures full of cork oak trees, and you’ll see Iberian pigs grazing and living in freedom and peace. You’ll also get to see the Grutas de las Maravillas, a natural cave almost 2000 meters long, packed with stalactites and stalagmites formed by the water running in the limestone.
Along the way, see the Saracen, a medieval castle in Aracena. Drop by the Almonaster la Real Mosque, one of few surviving rural mosques in Spain, and enjoy magical views over the village from the rocky spur of the Peña de Arias Montano. Break for lunch before continuing onwards to Rio Tinto.
For more than 5,000 years, Rio Tinto and its surroundings have been mined for their copper, silver and gold content. In fact, the entire landscape has changed so much that it wouldn’t be too far fetched to say it looks like Mars. The main river that runs here has turned red from all the mining, and it is considered to be the birthplace of both the Copper Age and the Bronze Age. Spend some time here along with your expert English, Spanish, French or Italian-speaking guide and pick up fascinating historical facts about this place.
