Journey through the Stunning Bavarian Alps
From Munich, follow the Deutsche Alpenstrasse or the German Alpine road to traverse the Bavarian Alps and the foothills of Chiemgau. Admire the Alpine scenery, and travel through mountains ideal for a summer hike. Along the way, pass by the freshwater lake Chiemsee, also known as the Bavarian Sea.
Explore Salzburg, a UNESCO World Heritage Site
Discover the birthplace of Mozart, the cozy Austrian city of Salzburg, west of the famous Salzkammergut region. Walk the cobbled streets of its Old Town and marvel at the Baroque architecture. Visit the home of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart at No. 9, Getreidegasse. Explore Domplatz, the Cathedral Square. Appreciate the surrounding architectural gems like the Salzburg Cathedral, Salzburg Residenz, and St. Peter's Abbey. Take the funicular to the Hohensalzburg Fortress, a heritage landmark of Salzburg overlooking the city from atop a hill.
Discover Salzkammergut and Salzburg Lake District
Visit St. Wolfgang, a resort town on the northern shore of Wolfgangsee or Lake Wolfgang. During spring, summer, and fall, grab the opportunity to enjoy a boat ride on Lake Wolfgang—one of the best lakes in the Salzkammergut resort area. Next, travel to Mondsee or Moon Lake, made famous for being featured in "The Sound of Music" and the James Bond novel Thunderball. Look out for the rock face called Drachenwand (or Dragon Wall), a favorite among rock climbing enthusiasts.
