Centre Pompidou houses Europe’s largest collection of Modern and Contemporary Art. Featuring the works of many iconoclast art masters, including Picasso, Pollock, and more, the building itself is considered a piece of modern art. An eye-turner in medieval quarters, Centre Pompidou is recognized as one of the ‘Big Three’ museums of Paris and is the third most visited attraction in Paris, attracting over 5.5 million visitors annually.
Named after the ex-French president, Georges Pompidou, the architecture of the building is a sight to behold. With all its utilitarian features like plumbing, air vents, and cable forming part of the external facade, this rule-breaking building is best described as a building turned inside out; the perfect stage for modern art to be displayed.
Explore the Paris Noir exhibition at the Centre Pompidou, which showcases the impact and contributions of Black artists in France from the 1950s to 2000. Showcasing works from 150 artists across Africa, the Americas, and the Caribbean, it highlights artistic movements such as abstraction, surrealism, and free figuration, many of which have been underrepresented in France. Additionally, it features four contemporary installations by artists Valérie John, Nathalie Leroy-Fiévée, Jay Ramier, and Shuck One, created specifically for this showcase. As one of the last major exhibitions before the Centre Pompidou undergoes renovations, Paris Noir offers a unique opportunity to experience a powerful, untold chapter of art history.
