Olivier award winners Mark Strong and Lesley Manville take center stage, bringing their talent to this fresh interpretation of Sophocles' ancient Greek tragedy reimagined for modern times. Olivier-winning Icke is known for reinventing classing theatre stories to attract younger audiences. These include his adaptations of Oresteia, Mary Stuart, and 1984.
The story
Sophocles' original Oedipus Rex, a cornerstone of Greek tragedy, tells the story of a king unwittingly fated to kill his father and marry his mother. Robert Icke's production opens on a tense election night, with polls predicting a landslide victory. But behind every powerful man is a woman, and Jocasta is no exception. As the truth unfolds, the lines between past and present blur, forcing Oedipus to confront a chilling prophecy and a shocking secret that could shatter everything he holds dear. The cast, designers, director, writer and everyone else involved. This was a beautiful production. Edge of my seat the entire time. I'm an old lady who's seen thousands of plays on and off Broadway and a few in London and this was the greatest evening at the theater ever. Yay to all the people who made it happen. I'm also an actor and I bow down to all the actors in this play. Holy moly, I'm still thinking about it.
