About Oceanario Lisboa
Oceanário Lisboa is split into two levels, with each level subdivided into two blocks that fit together almost squarely. The four sections stand for the four oceans—the Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, and Antarctic. Observe each ocean from a different vantage point as you make your way around the Oceanarium's top floor. As you descend, you'll be able to see the oceans from a fish's perspective. Large fish, sharks, rays, and five million litres of saltwater inhabit the enormous central aquarium in the centre part!
Enjoy the Ocean Sunfish at Oceanarium Lisboa—it's the world's largest bony fish, resembling a child's drawing as it rests on the water's surface. This rare sight is a unique feature of the aquarium, given the challenges in caring for these giant sunbathing rocks.
Keep an eye out for the aquarium's two massive spider crabs, affectionately nicknamed "King" and "Queen." These impressive creatures, with leg spans exceeding 3 meters, are the largest of their kind on display in Europe.
The central tank is larger than four Olympic-sized pools and is home to one hundred kinds of fish and other marine life. Being on two levels allows you to see it from various angles, allowing you to spot fish that might otherwise be difficult to notice.
While the marine life takes center stage, the Oceanário also showcases incredible examples of coastal ecosystems. Look for the recreated salt marshes and rocky shores, teeming with diverse invertebrates and birds, offering a glimpse into the interconnectedness of our planet's habitats.
The Oceanário goes beyond entertainment, actively participating in research and conservation efforts. They've even developed a unique closed-loop water treatment system, recycling 90% of their water, making them a model for sustainable aquarium practices.
