Explore the life of Saartjie Baartman, an unfortunate star of the 19th-century London freak show circuit. Saartjie, better known as ‘Hottentot Venus’, was born a native to the Khoikhoi tribe in Southern Africa and moved to London in hope of a better future. Based on a true life story, the journey highlights the social injustice suffered by Saartjie, her life in slavery and her miserable mental state.
Follow her journey which started off as her being called ‘Saartjie Baartman’, and then progressed to ‘Hottentot Venus’. Her rise to fame and eventual relationship with a French scientist is at the end of a life of ridicule. Venus is a tragic-carnival, a soul-wrenching journey honoring the life of this brave, steadfast and proud lady.
