Why Watch Handel's Messiah
Why Watch Handel's Messiah
Composed by George Frideric Handel, Messiah is an oratorio in English that was compiled with the help of Charles Jennens. It had a very modest opening, but soon gained in popularity and went on to become one of the most well-known and popular pieces of choral works in Western classical music.
The original was written for just nine instruments, although modern renditions are much larger scale in nature. Handel’s composition stood from his other oratorios since it was characterized by an orchestral restraint. The use of trumpets was limited, and the opening is dominated by solo and instrumental performances. Handel’s Messiah is all set to deliver an uplifting message following the St. Petersburg Ballet Theater performances of the Nutcracker in the UAE’s Year of Tolerance.
The Show
The 200 strong crew of the St. Petersburg Ballet Theater Orchestra is breathtaking to hear in person. Set in the magnificent Dubai Opera, the acoustics are top notch, and you can hear almost every instrument being played if you focus. The solo performances are beautiful, and Handel’s genius can be experienced through the performance of the orchestral musicians. The chorus follows the story of Jesus Christ and his coming as the Messiah. Part 2 covers the death of Christ, and his resurrection and ascension. The third act covers the day of judgment, and the ultimate triumphal over death and sin. Follow the story of Christ as it is set to an unforgettable score by the legendary Handel.
