Audio tour + Skip the line is the way to go. Great audio commentary (not all tracks essential--honestly listen to the ones that seem cool). If you do audio tour, BRING YOUR OWN HEADPHONES and download the app ahead of time. Wonderful mueseum. Not too big or imposing. Were there for about 2 hours and felt we saw everything. Be respectful and stay quiet. The crowd we were with (went during the end of June) kept getting "Silencio"'d by the staff.

I have been on many guided tours around multiple cities but my guide was amazing this time. He was so knowledgeable, nice and genuinely excited to showcase the city and it's amazing art. I learnt so much from him. These things can be borning sometimes even if you love history but my guide made it enjoyable and shared information in such a relatable way that I could not help but be engaged for the full tour. I got to hear the history behind what seemed to be just a normal sign and had I done a walling tour alone I surely would have missed out on its beauty and understanding. Would highly recommend 👌

Halls of Accademia Gallery

  1. Hall of the Colossus: Named after the ancient plaster casts housed here, Hall of the Colossus houses the works of Domenico Ghirlandaio, Filippino Lippi, Paolo Uccello, Perugino, and Botticelli.
  2. Hall of the Prisoners: The Hall of the Prisoners is named after the unfinished sculptures of four enormous male nudes by Michelangelo. They were commissioned back in 1505 but work remained incomplete due to financial constraints.
  3. The Tribune: This hall is home to Michelangelo’s David, one of the most remarkable sculptures in Italy. David is surrounded by works of artists like Bronzino, Cecchino Salviati, and Allori, whose style and ideas are said to similar to Michelangelo’s.
  4. Gipsoteca Bartolini: Housing the works of Lorenzo Bartolini, one of the leading professors at the Academy, and Pampaloni, the collection in this hall exhibits the evolution of Florentine art from New-classicism to Romanticism.
  5. Florentine Gothic: The last hall on the ground floor comprises three rooms, and are altogether known as the Florentine Gothic halls. The three rooms are dedicated to 13th and early 14th century artists like the Giottesque painters, Orcagna, and his brothers, respectively.
  6. Museum of Musical Instruments: The hall hosts over forty musical instruments that played a significant role in the day-to-day business of the Medicean court.
  7. Florence Between 1370 and 1430: The works of art in this hall date back to the 14th century and features work that is dedicated to the regional religious practices of those times. The main hall is comprised of art commissioned by the Florentine Guilds. The altarpieces are the greatest attraction of the hall.

David by Michelangelo

Almost three years in the making, this icon of Renaissance art today stands as the crown jewel of the Accademia Gallery. Michelangelo’s David can now be seen in The Tribune at Accademia Gallery under a skylight that was intended to appear as a halo above the structure.

Rape of the Sabines by Jean de Boulogne

In the Hall of the Colossus, stands this plaster cast model that was created by Jean de Boulogne. The model depicts in astonishing detail, three figures engaged in a serpentine motion. The entire structure was cut from a single block of marble.

Coronation of the Virgin by Jacopo Di Cione

If there ever was a panel painting that you need to see, it is this. The abundant use of the golden color gives the painting a strange radiance. The reason for this is that the painting was commissioned by the magistrates of the Mint.

Slaves by Michelangelo

This is a collection of four unfinished male nudes by Michelangelo. Initially, these statues hit many roadblocks until they were abandoned in an unfinished state. However, it is claimed that the statues were deliberately left in an incomplete state to better represent the effort of the slaves to free themselves from the marble rigidity.
