Why Watch Amelie The Musical
Why Watch Amelie The Musical
Fresh off its supremely successful UK tour, Amelie is all set to premiere at West End. An adaptation of the 2001 film of the same name, Amelie is the story of a lonely girl who is determined to spread joy and happiness. Michael Fentiman’s direction makes the production much more fun and enjoyable than the original film, which some critics called slightly exasperating. Amelie The Musical faces none of those drawbacks; the plot is well strung together, and the breathtaking performances by the lead actors makes for a spectacular show.
What makes the production all the more special is that it does not have any show-stopping numbers. It gently builds up the score so that by the end, the audience is completely vested in the story. The ensemble cast, in particular, put up an unforgettable show. Audrey Brisson makes Amelie her own, and her portrayal wonderfully depicts every joy, disappointment of hope. Danny Mac shines as Nino, and his Disney prince looks are completely hidden under a beard, glasses and baggy clothing, allowing his voice to truly shine. The staging and choreography are stellar, which celebrates the mood of every moment. The final parts of the production have been hailed as one of the most beautiful endings, and the pin-drop silence is a testament to Michael Fentin’s superb narrative.
The Story
Amelie is born to Amandine, a neurotic mother and a germaphobe father, Raphael. Amelie feels isolated from her parents, with the only contact between them being during the monthly health check-up. Her only solace is a telescope, which she uses to view the galaxy from her little room. Amelie is wrongly diagnosed with a heart defect, which causes her parents to homeschool her. Amelie develops a mischievous personality and a very active imagination.
She becomes best friends with their pet goldfish, Fluffy. One day, Fluffy jumps into Amelie’s glass, which causes her parents to panic and release Fluffy into the Seine. Soon, her mother dies in an unfortunate accident, causing her father to withdraw from society. Follow Amelie as she grows up to a quiet and happy life, while working as a waitress at a Montmartre cafe. Will this kind-hearted young girl finally find the excitement and fun that she is looking for?
