Why Watch The Ocean at the End of the Lane
Why Watch The Ocean at the End of the Lane
After a critically acclaimed and highly successful performance at the National Theatre last December, The Ocean at the End of the Lane is set to return to the West End in all its glory. With a star-studded creative team, the show is certain to score a slew of five-star reviews all over again. The play tells the story of a man who visits his childhood home, an old farmhouse in Sussex, after several years. As he gazes at the small pond around which he once played, he begins to remember the events that transpired on his 12th birthday. He recalls the time he spent battling dark and ancient forces in an enchanted world with his childhood friend Lettie.
This stage adaptation by Joel Horwood does not shy away from exploring some of the darker aspects of Neil Gaiman’s legendary novel. Gaiman himself is quite popular for a wide range of books such as Good Omens, Stardust, and The Graveyard Book. He was one of the first writers to win the Newberry Medal as well as the Carnegie Medal for his 2008 masterpiece The Graveyard Book. The show is directed by the talented Katy Rudd.
The Story
As a man revisits the cherished haven of his youth, he stands beside the tranquil pond of the time-honored Sussex farmhouse that once was his haven. Unexpectedly, he's transported back to his twelfth birthday, an extraordinary day when his remarkable companion, Lettie, declared that this unassuming pond wasn't merely a simple basin of water; it was, in truth, an ocean, a realm where limitless potential resides.
Propelled into a domain of enchantment and awe, their very survival hinges upon their courage to confront age-old forces poised to obliterate their surroundings. Amidst enigma and jeopardy, they must summon the bravery to grapple with powers intent on unraveling their world.
