Puerta della Carta
Puerta della Carta, which means ‘Paper Gate’ serves as the entrance between the Doge's Palace and St Mark's Basilica. The Gothic-styled entrance is extravagant with intricate carvings and ancient relics. The most fascinating of all these, perhaps, is the sculpture of Francesco Foscari, the ruling Doge during the construction of the palace, kneeling before the Lion of St. Mark.
Scala d'Oro
This extraordinary staircase was built over a period of 29 years and is gilded in gold. It starts from the ground floor of the Doge’s Palace and goes to the Doge's Apartment on the top floor, providing a grand entrance to everyone visiting.
Chamber of the Council of Ten
Not only the grandest but also the largest room in the entire palace, the Chamber of the Council of Ten can hold at least 1000 individuals at one time. The Counsel of the Ten consisted of ten powerful individuals who advised the Doge on matters of the state. It was within the four walls of the Chamber of the Council of Ten where important decisions were made.
Armory room
As the name suggests, the Armory room was where all the arms and ammunition were store in anticipation of enemy attack. From harnesses to swords, you’ll find a variety of weapons here. However, the most fascinating of them all is the Devil Chest, a contraption made up of four guns and poisonous arrows.
Secret rooms
Doge’s Palace has many secret rooms that were used to hold and interrogate prisoners. These small rooms were small and coarsely constructed, with a small window to let the light in. However, the pristine prisoners were housed in more comfortable cells called ‘piombi’.
New Prison and Bridge of Sighs
Over the years, a new prison was constructed in a building adjacent to the Doge’s Palace, across the canal. A bridge was built to facilitate easy transportation of these prisoners. The bridge soon started to be called the Bridge of Sighs as it was said that prisoners would catch their last glimpse of the canal on the bridge and sigh before setting foot inside the prison.
