Debussy’s La Mer
Composed between 1903 and 1905, La Mer consists of three symphonic sketches for orchestral performance. It premiered on 15 October 1905 in Paris directed by Camille Chevillard. This was one of the more unusual pieces to be written at the time since its subject was the sea, and not mythologies, literature, or with any human elements.
Ravel’s La Valse
Created by Maurice Ravel, this piece is often known as a tribute to waltz. A choreographic poem for orchestra, many people have felt that this was Ravel’s representation of post-World War I Europe. La Valse was also made into a ballet by George Balanchine in 1951.
