Admire the architecture of the monastery
Learn about the historical tales of the monastery from your guide and admire its Manueline architecture. Designed by Diogo de Boitaca, the monument represents the era of the Renaissance. Inside the monastery, take in elaborate sculptural details and maritime motifs embedded on its walls.
Explore the interiors of the historic cloister
Take a stroll through the cloister and savor the Manueline ornaments, the double arches, the pointed swirls, and the psychedelic ceilings. See engraved marine monsters, coral, rope reels, and other maritime themes on the corner columns. Discover the tales behind the cloisters from your guide.
Explore the adjoining rooms and beyond
Visit the adjoining rooms and peek at a library that is centuries old. Explore a room that is devoted to the history of the monument. As you continue to walk with your guide, you’ll come across an intricately designed doorway that leads to Chapter House, the place which harbors the tomb of Alexandro Herculano, a famous Portuguese historian. Then, stop by the former monks' refectory, a space that contains beautiful 18th-century azulejos tiles portraying the Biblical story of Joseph. Finally, visit the ground to enjoy spectacular views over the River Tagus.
