Instrukcje ludzi w różnych punktach w ciągu dnia nie były jasne. Po pierwsze, wysiedliśmy z pociągu na niewłaściwej stacji i musieliśmy zapłacić 9 euro więcej za osobę, aby wejść na górę. Po drugie, nie otrzymaliśmy słuchawek, kiedy powinniśmy, więc przegapiliśmy niektóre wyjaśnienia. Całe doświadczenie nie było dobrze zarządzane.

Kupiliśmy pakiet "Montserrat Experience z audioprzewodnikiem i biletami kolejowymi", który dał nam swobodę zwiedzania tego miejsca we własnym tempie i docenienia scenerii, która niewątpliwie zapiera dech w piersiach. Zakupu dokonaliśmy poprzedniego wieczoru i z samego rana udaliśmy się na stację kolejową, warto wspomnieć, że bilety (kolejowe i wstępu) nie są wysyłane pocztą elektroniczną, więc należy być świadomym wybranej godziny rozpoczęcia wycieczek i wziąć pod uwagę, że bilety należy odebrać w kasie biletowej między 8 rano a 2 po południu. Po przybyciu do Monserrat udaliśmy się do biura informacji, gdzie dano nam wszystko, czego potrzebowaliśmy na wycieczkę. Bardzo uprzejmy i pomocny personel.

Great experience...EXCEPT they should not sell tickets for 5:30: we had 2 minutes to get to the museum before they closed the doors. Then all the food shops were closing and there was nothing to eat while we had to wait an hour for the train going down. Even the medic office was closed and we needed a Tylenol. Gondola going down had also closed and we were looking forward to that. Also price of tram was not included in tickets and I didn't read anything about that and we had to pay extra. Besides all that it was a great place to visit. And the reminder on the phone to head out of the city was a nice touch.

A basilica of reverie

Montserrat comprises the Sanctuary of the Virgin Mary of Montserrat and the Benedictine monastery which for almost 1,000 years has been at the service of pilgrims from all over the world. These pilgrims come to worship the Black Madonna, a Romanesque sculpture dating from the late 12th century featuring delicately carved features. Enjoy timed entry tickets to see the Black Madonna, before you set off to explore the rest of Montserrat.

With an audio guide, a map, and an informative booklet, you can discover on your own all the most important facets of the monastery's history, not to mention the major sites of the Sanctuary of Montserrat. The Audiovisual Room 'Montserrat Portes Endins' showcases what Montserrat is all about and what it means. The exhibition revolves around three main elements: the mountain, the monastery, and the sanctuary.

The Museum of Montserrat (MDM) is home to one of the country's most important art collections. Containing works by Caravaggio, El Greco, Rusiñol, Casas, Picasso, Dali, Monet, and others, it also has a valuable collection of the Archaeology of the Ancient World with archaeological remains from the Near East (ancient Persia, Mesopotamia, Egypt, the Holy Land). There are also temporary exhibitions in addition to the permanent collection. The MDM was declared a Museum of National Interest in 2006.

Montserrat Boys’ Choir, which serves the sanctuary of Montserrat, is one of the oldest in Europe that accompanies religious ceremonies and communal prayers in the basilica, from Monday to Friday at 1 pm.

Know before you go

What to bring

It is recommended to wear comfortable clothes along with comfortable shoes as the tour involves a fair amount of walking.
Carry sunscreen, sunhat, sunglasses, and a bottle of water, especially during summer months.

What's not allowed

Strict dress code: It is mandatory to cover shoulders and knees for both men and women. Flipflops aren't allowed.
Shutterbugs, take note: Flash photography is a no-go inside the basilica.

Accessibility

The majority of the Monastery complex is accessible to guests with disabilities but wheelchair users won’t be able to get right up to the Black Madonna.

Additional information

During booking, the time slot you select is for your timed entrance to visit Black Madonna. All other parts of your visit can be done at your own pace.
There’s a restaurant on site (not included in the price).
When planning your visit from Barcelona, factor in at least 70 minutes for the commute and 20 minutes for the uphill walk to the Black Madonna.
Mass at the Basilica takes place Monday to Saturday at 11am and 9.30am on all holidays including Sundays.
The Escolania de Montserrat boys sing at the basilica daily between Monday to Friday at 1pm and during Sunday Mass at 11am.
Choir performance times may vary in accordance with special religious celebrations and the school calendar.
Note that last-minute time changes may occur without prior notice.
