Your Experience
Built in 1891 by Emperor Franz Joseph I of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the Kunsthistorisches Museum is the largest museum in all of Austria and one of the most significant art museums in the world. Housing artifacts spanning over 5 millennia, all the way from Ancient Egypt and classical antiquity (between 8th century BC and 6th century AD) to late 18th century masterpieces, the Kunsthistorisches Museum is a testament to the patronage of the distinguished House of Habsburg.
The massive Picture Gallery here is home to the main collection of the Habsburg family. Notable works from eminent artists such as Raphael, Titan, Pieter Brueghel, Rembrandt, and Peter Paul Rubens are present in the Gallery. The museum also houses the largest collection of works by Pieter Brueghel, which promises to take your breath away. At the Kunstkammer, which translates to the cabinet of curiosities, you can see eye-catching works of art by goldsmiths, including the stunning pieces by Benvenuto Cellini. You can also catch sight of some valuable mechanical timepieces of a different era, and see the intricate mechanical designs. Filigree artworks made of ivory and other sculptural masterpieces complete a full-fledged and unrivaled art experience.
The striking architecture of the building itself is another work of art. The museum’s interiors are lavishly decorated with murals, gold-leaf ornamentation, stucco, and marble. A grand staircase is also present within the museum, lined with paintings by Ernst Klimt, Gustav Klimt, Mihaly Munkacsy.
