A unique setting
The Collection of the Russian Museum in Málaga is housed inside an entire old tobacco factory. Not only will you be awestruck by the works on display here, but the venue itself will charm you. The tobacco factory, built in a regionalist style of the 20s, is now home to centuries worth of art. It has a small auditorium, three screening halls, a space for digital resources, and even a reading room packed with reference books!
Watch out for a series of long-term and temporary exhibitions that engage with the evolution of Russian art and its relationship with European culture.
Engaging exhibitions
Currently, in 2024 and during part of 2025, you can visit the Utopia Collection and Avant-garde: Russian art in the Costakis Collection. This remarkable collection is proof of George Costakis' unwavering commitment and visionary spirit rather than just a collection of artwork. It captures the spirit of a time when artists passionately pursued novel artistic directions while attempting to incorporate their work into everyday life.
The avant-garde in Russia was a significant social and cultural experiment. Artists such as Kazimir Malevich and Liubov Popova envisioned a time when art would transcend conventional boundaries and have an impact on ordinary products, architecture, and design. This collection provides a singular window into the imaginative realm of Russian avant-garde.
In addition, this fantastic collection is completed by temporary collections included in the entry.
Beyond its time. The adventure of a collector with pieces of art never seen in Spain: The collecting passion of José María Castañé.
The Collection of the Russian Museum holds a large exhibition with several hundred pieces that represent the passion of José María Castañé, a member of the board of trustees of the National Library and the Prado Museum, and owner of the largest and best collection of Russian paintings in Spain! With 3 prestigious curators (Tvan Samarine for Russian art, Juan Manuel Bonet for non-Russian art, and José María Faraldo for historical documentation), the exhibition includes pieces of Russian art, never seen in Spain, by artists such as Natan Altman, Robert Deineka, Zinaida Serebriakova, Vasili Kandinsky, Natalia Goncharova or Liubov Popova. Non-Russian art includes works from Anselm Kieffer, Alex Katz, Eduardo.
There are 2 more temporary collections: BORIS GRAYS: THINKING IN LOOP
and - BORIS GRAYS: CROSSED LOOKS. Check them out too for a wholesome art experience.
