National Palace of Sintra
At the Palace of Sintra you can explore over 1,000 years of Portuguese history. The palace is immediately discernible by its two conical chimneys - a characteristic trait of Sintra itself. With its richly decorated rooms, galleries and corridors, it was a favorite for a succession of Portuguese royal families and their retinues, right until the end of the monarchy in 1910.
Spend your time marveling at how the natural landscape was used to merge Manueline, Gothic and Mudejar designs. The windows with surmounted arches and walls covered in glazed tiles of geometric patterns are a testament to medieval brushwork and craftsmanship.
National Palace of Queluz & Gardens
As one of the last great Rococo buildings to be designed in Europe, the National Palace of Queluz is a heritage site that you cannot miss on your visit to Portugal. A walk through the magnificent palace will take you back to a time of regal balls and stately dinners. Gasp at the lavish interiors of the Throne Room, where the royalty used to receive their guests.
The entire room is decorated with gold carvings, ornate mirrors and large paintings, giving you a sneak-peek into how the Portuguese monarchy used to live back in the day. See relics like the Princess’s Apartments, the Ambassador’s Room, and the Music Hall.
After a tour inside the palace, explore the over 16 hectares of gardens outside the palace. Wander among ponds, fountains and statues inspired by classical mythology, the most famous of which is the Fountain of Neptune.
