Your experience
Palazzo Vecchio stands majestically on the Florence skyline, and still serves as a seat of the city council. Built during the Middle Ages, it still preserves the austere architecture of the fourteenth century, with its crenellated top and the imposing Arnolfo Tower. The elegant courtyard by Michelozzo welcomes you.
The Medici legacy
On the ground floor, you can discover the ‘Traces of Florence’ exhibition that narrates the history of the city. Head up to the first floor to admire the famous and beautiful “Hall of the 500” (Salone dei Cinquecento) that once hosted the Maggior Consiglio, or Grand Council, of Florence. It was transformed into a lavish formal hall by Giorgio Vasari under Duke Cosimo I’s patronage. On the same floor, explore the contrastingly intimate yet charming study of Francesco I de’ Medici.
The second floor has most of the monumental apartments, including the beautiful private quarters of Eleonora of Toledo and Cosimo I de’ Medici, and the stunning boardrooms. This floor also had a Quartiere degli Elementi built specifically for their guests.
Renaissance symbol
The greatest artists of the Renaissance period worked in the numerous halls and apartments of the family. All along the walls and mezzanine, find an incredible series of frescoes, paintings, decorations, and statues of the greatest Italian artists, such as Michelangelo, Donatello, Verrocchio, Vasari, Ghirlandaio, and Stradano.
Visiting the palace means strolling among the wonders of the Renaissance and retracing its history, discovering the secrets and tales linked to the powerful Medici family.

The two main floors of the museum are wheelchair accessible, but architectural barriers prevent access to the mezzanine floor and to some of the educational activity locations.

Guests with disabilities can enter the museum for free. Wheelchairs & strollers may be borrowed at the cloakroom free of charge.
Visitors with mobility issues can access the building via the side entrance in Via dei Gondi. The lift, situated on the ground floor in the Cortile della Dogana, is for visitors with reduced mobility only.
Additional information
- This palace is also the seat of the city council. Unfortunately, this means that on certain special occasions when institutional ceremonies are scheduled, the museum may be totally or partially closed to the public.
