As a traveler, I've seen more than a few castles and palaces that n my time. Pena Palace is unique among them. The views from every window, balcony and terrace are breathtaking. The people running the place are kind and friendly. I felt I had a genuine glimpse into the lives of the former occupants due to the fact the original furnishings, right down to the personal knickknacks were still in place. Overall it was a most memorable experience.

This was a great tour and I am very glad I went on it. Definitely wouldn't have been able to go to all the places on this tour without their transportation and guiding. Felt like there was enough time at each place as well. Overall great tour and I highly reccomend. They know what they are doing!

Our guide, Ricardo, and driver Victor were awesome. Very patient when other customers did not show up at the agreed time. A better system should be in place for this, maybe have a sign for visual people, that shows meetup times, or ask people to set up alarm? Or both. Ricardo's Spanish and English was really clear. He answered all my questions. We were really happy with the experience. Thank you

Our guide Andrea was lovely and very friendly full of facts and interesting information. Tour ran on time, great company. Would of been handy to have charging ports, on the bus and no water was provided? It said it would be when I booked, and mentioned a souvenir to take home. But apart from that, awesome tour 😎 Lunch was great, and very filling. I would highly recommend this tour. Katie G from Australia

The Pena Palace in Sintra holds a rich history within its walls. Each section has so much to explore and marvel at. Here’s a glimpse of what to expect on your Pena Palace tour.

Architecture

Older sections of the palace were part of a 12th-century monastery dedicated to the Virgin Mary, while the newer sections were heavily influenced by the presence of European Romanticism. The young Prince Ferdinand acquired the monastery in 1838, after which he was set on building a fairy-tale-like castle for himself. This can be seen by the presence of towers, domes, terraces, decorative battlements, and more.

The Chapel

Our Lady of Pena Chapel was established in the 16th century and remains intact today. You’ll find that the chapel contains a small nave with a vaulted Gothic ceiling. Its walls are made up of the original 16th-century azulejo tiles.

Royal Dining Room

The dining room was formerly part of the monastery and was later modified for Royal use. The ceiling of the refectory dates back to the 16th century, vaulted with ribbing done in the style of Manueline. The tiles that adorn the walls were commissioned from the Roseira factory in the 19th century, while the oak furniture was ordered from Casa Gaspar in Lisbon in the 18th century.

The Noble Room

The Noble Room was supposed to be used as a hall where ambassadors were received upon arrival, however, this objective was never achieved. Later, it was remodeled as a billiards room.

The Kitchen

Forming the largest part of Pena Palace, the kitchens were often used to prepare dishes for large banquets in the palace. Out of the 3 original stoves, only one remains, however, all of the chimneys are still in use. On the walls of the kitchen are several copper pots and pans engraved with Kind Fernando’s monogram.

Pena Park

After building his extraordinary castle, King Ferdinand set out to create a charming surrounding to suit it. Keeping the exaggerated style of Romanticism of the castle, the gardens followed a similar design. Pena Park was completely remodeled using the climate and topology of Sintra to its advantage. It spreads across 85 hectares of land, filled with trees and plants from all corners of the world.
