House of Vettii
Located in the western sector of the Pompeii ruins, House of Vettii is a luxurious villa that served as a resting place for wealthy merchants. This Roman townhouse is beautifully decorated with ancient wall paintings and water spouting statues. Most of these paintings are in the Pompeian Fourth style.
Villa dei Misteri
Villa dei Misteri or the Villa of the Mysteries is another Roman villa located in the outskirts of Pompeii. The highlight of this villa is one of its rooms that contains a string of frescoes that are said to depict a woman being initiated into a secret cult. Complete with a garden and terrace, Villa dei Misteri will make for an interesting visit.
Temple of Apollo
One of the oldest and most important structures of Pompeii, the Temple of Apollo dates as far back as 120 BC. It is a mix of both Greek and Italic architecture and is made up of 48 Ionic columns. Interestingly, the statue of Apollo and the bust of Diana seen in the temple today are copies of the original artifacts excavated at the site.
The House of the Tragic Poet
In the western sector of the ruins rests a small house decorated with ancient frescoes and beautiful adornments. Experts believe that this house once belonged to a prominent poet. Apart from Greek mythology, the mosaic floors also depict the painting of a group of people gathered backstage.
Forum of Pompeii
The center of all important activities, the Forum is a large rectangular open space located at the center of the Pompeii ruins. Apart from being the nucleus of all cultural and political activities, it also housed the marketplace and the bathhouses. The cross-shaped design of the courthouse was later adopted by churches across Europe.
House of the Faun
The House of the Faun derived its name from a statue that was found there. The Villa is large and houses many contemporary artworks, the most important ones being the Alexander Mosaic, which shows Alexander the Great fighting against Darius III of Persia.
