What to Expect On This Walking Tour of Pompeii?
What to Expect On This Walking Tour of Pompeii?
This tour is the only way to see the newly-unearthed buildings of Pompeii along with the oldest and most important landmarks in the city. Enjoy the company of an archaeologist guide, speaking either English or German.
A Series of Once-Lively Public Spaces
Check out the social theater district, the main street lined with artisan stores and hot baths, and the central plaza surrounded by a plethora of temples. See the seldom-visited area north of the excavations, where the most current excavations take place. The 20,000-seat amphitheater was one of Pompeii's largest structures. You can now walk on the stage and go all the way around it. The Forum was the heart of civic activity in ancient Pompeii. Admire the neighboring Basilica that doubled as a courtroom and the Temple of Jupiter. Ancient Pompeii was also known for its fast food restaurants called thermopolium which sold fish, cheese, bread, and even snails.
Life in Private Spaces
Take a tour of a newly uncovered aristocratic mansion and see the remnants of lives lost to the Vesuvius disaster; the Garden of the Fugitives holds several plaster replicas. One exposed building is Porta Marina, a major entrance to the city. Modern conservation efforts have allowed the original paintings and inscriptions on this gate to be conserved. The House of the Faun, recently restored, is the largest residence in Pompeii, decorated with paintings, mosaics, and sculptures.
