Home to more than 5000 animals, the Melbourne Zoo is located in Royal Park, about 4 kilometers from the center of the city.
Fluttering Butterflies & Majestic Lions
On the Main Trail, spot a variety of rare species such as red pandas, white-cheeked gibbons, zebras, giraffes, macaws, tortoises, and the platypus. The Trail of the Elephants is home to seven Asian elephants, and you can see these majestic creatures up close. Butterfly House is a walk-through exhibit in the form of a greenhouse and contains a wide variety of colorful tropical butterflies. The Orangutan Sanctuary is home to a family of orangutans. At the Lion Gorge, come face-to-face with some of the most formidable carnivores (and a couple of omnivores), including tigers, lions, Snow Leopards, and the Philippine Crocodile.
Australia's Wildlife: Terrestrial & Aquatic
Walk through the Australian Bush section, home to the country's unique wildlife, and see kangaroos, wombats, echidnas, emus, and koalas. The Wild Sea exhibit is undoubtedly the most special and includes seals, baby penguins, pelicans, and fiddler rays. Underwater sounds and lighting give this exhibit a surreal feel, and it is breathtaking to see in person. Enter the deep jungles of Africa at the Gorilla Rainforest, and see a variety of rare species such as the black-capped capuchins, black-handed spider monkeys, and the colobus.
