As you step into the Sansevero Chapel, watch rays of light dance through the stained glass windows illuminating secrets centuries old in vivid colors. Amidst the elaborate Baroque frescoes and marble sculptures, the Veiled Christ by Giuseppe Sanmartino stands apart. Though carved from marble, the delicate veil over Christ’s form looks so real and it feels like it will flutter in any breath. People were so irked by its realistic details that rumors started floating. Most believed that some dark alchemy allowed the artist and the patron of the Chapel to turn anything and everything into marble.
