Liyuan Theatre offers a window into one of the many operatic art forms in Beijing, consisting of artistically painted sets, exquisite costumes, graceful gestures, and of course opera singing. A form of traditional Chinese theater, Peking Opera originated in the late 18th century. Combining music, mime, dance, and acrobatics in a colorful and elaborate spectacle, this complicated stage form has little in common with the operatic art we know from the West. Performers create a vivid impression in the minds of viewers with their movements which are symbolic rather than realistic in nature. The performance includes arias, gongs, drums, facial paintings, and many other features. The theatre also offers English subtitles on lateral screens so people can follow the storyline. This way, you not only get to witness this theatrical feat but also get to be a part of it.
