Why Watch La Traviata
Why Watch La Traviata
The spectacular production of Verdi’s hugely popular La Traviata returns to stage at the Joan Sutherland Theatre, Sydney Opera House. Director Elijah Moshinsky is all set to take the reins to present this world-famous opera based on the original production by celebrated director Francesca Zambello.
The Story
Violetta Valéry is plagued by an illness that is sure to kill her. She knows that she is not left with much time to live, and as a courtesan, she has never experienced the magic of true love. She is smart, well-read, and charming; characteristics that were not common amongst 19th-century courtesans. When she meets Alfredo Germont at a party, Violetta is deeply moved by Alfredo’s honest demeanor and child-like attitude to life.
As Alfredo and Violetta's love threatens to put his family to shame, Alfredo's father takes his appeal to Violetta. As Violetta submits to his wishes, her act of self-sacrifice sees leads to a truly heartrending series of events that is gorgeously depicted and expressed by the opera artists!
