The palace is wonderful inside with its wonderful collection of unique artwork by Clint and more. The gardens amazing even though it was winter. And because we had pre-booked tickets we didn't have to wait too much more than 5 minutes.

The site and the visit itself were excellently satisfying, but the management of the entrances, and especially the return from the restaurant, were truly problematic. In fact, no one warns on the site that by entering the restaurant to have lunch you cannot return to the museum and not even the help of the restaurant manager was managing to resolve the matter. I had to protest quite a bit, but the staff at the entrance were not completely understanding, despite the evidence being all in my favor.

We loved the eclectic exhibitions. We didn't like that there was no noticeable information on the layout; the "lower" and "upper" refer not to the levels of the same building but to two different edifices separated by a large garden.

Belverdere was fantastic but venue was not able to help us with altering tickets as we had not booked directly through them. Background: we had inadvertently booked twice for Upper Belvedere and didn't relised until the date. We asked the venue if there was a possibilty of changing one of the ticket purchases to lower Belvedere but they said they woudn't do.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Belvedere Palace is also the site of the Austrian State Treaty. Consisting of two palaces, the Upper and Lower Belvedere, and extensive gardens the unique complex is one of the world's most supreme specimens of the Baroque architectural ensemble.

Upper Belvedere Palace

The magnificent structure was built in the 18th century when the Austrian general Prince Eugene of Savoy commissioned a summer residence from the famous Baroque architect Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt. After the demise of Prince Eugene, the entire complex was acquired by Empress Maria Theresa. She transformed the Upper Belvedere into an exhibition venue for the imperial collections, thus turning the place into one of the world's first public museums. In the present day, the Belvedere is one of the prominent museums across the globe with famous art collections dating all the way back to the Middle Ages. Highlights include the world's largest collection of Gustav Klimt paintings (including The Kiss), famous works from the periods of Austrian Baroque, French Impressionism, Viennese Biedermeier, and from Vienna around 1900.

Lower Belvedere Palace

The Lower Belvedere served as a residential building for Prince Eugene and marked the boundary between the Baroque building complex and the imperial city of Vienna. Today, the rooms of Lower Belvedere and the Orangery play host to illustrious temporary exhibitions and events. Other highlights of the palace include The Hall of Grotesques, The Marble Gallery, The Gold Cabinet, and the Palace Stables. See the stucco war trophies that proudly reflect Prince Eugene's military successes in The Marble Gallery, and see the lavish Gold Cabinet that has been displayed in its original condition since 1765. Visit The Hall of Grotesques to admire paintings preserved in their original condition, as well as the grotesques painted on the walls and ceilings. A special treat awaits art lovers in the Palace Stables, the home of priceless artworks from the Medieval collection.
