Why Watch Tootsie
Why Watch Tootsie
The 1982 film of the same name serves as the inspiration for the musical comedy. David Yazbek, a Tony Award and Drama Desk Award-winner is the mastermind behind the music and lyrics of Tootsie. The sound is on par with a movie score, and have been critically acclaimed by numerous reviewers. Santino Fontana, playing the role of Michael Dorsey, is undoubtedly the star of the show, and his incredible voice forms of the crux of this satirical comedy. His falsetto is remarkably stable, and the entire musical is ridiculous, constantly poking fun at itself. Scott Ellis, the director, executes the story with an incredible comic panache that makes the characters all the more endearing. Costume designer William Long ensures that the female persona, Dorothy Michaels looks close enough to the original Dorothy, which is sure to keep longtime fans happy. Writer Robert Horn and director Scott Ellis have figured out exactly how to keep the 1982 film relevant in 2019, ensuring that it has its own unique personality, something that is often lacking with other film-to-stage adaptations. They are able to immediately impress the audience from the opening sequence, ensuring that the viewers are left rooted to their seats.
