Veiled Christ
The Veiled Christ, sculpted in 1753 by Giuseppe Sanmartino, is a sculptural masterpiece, depicting the body of Christ covered by an incredibly realistic marble veil, which appears almost transparent. The intricate details, including the instruments of the Passion at Christ’s feet, highlight the artist’s exceptional skill. Many admire its lifelike quality and have even speculated that alchemy was involved in its creation.
Sansevero Chapel
The Cappella Sansevero, originally built in 1590, houses nearly 30 remarkable artworks. Besides the Veiled Christ, it features other notable sculptures like Modesty and Disillusion. The chapel’s ceiling, painted by Francesco Maria Russo, depicts the Glory of Paradise. Once adorned with a labyrinth floor design symbolizing initiation, the chapel remains a treasure trove of Baroque art and a must-visit destination for those exploring Naples.
