Billed as half day and it just squeezed into that at 4.5 hours but it felt a little rushed. But guide Sandra was excellent, funny and good English. Why the Monastery cannot implement a better queueing system is a mystery as they plenty of experience, but that's not the tour company fault.

The tour was very smooth with our guide Julia. She was very fun, had great suggestions for our group and even got us into the monastery early for our visit.

The organization was impeccable. The guide, Gloria, helped us with her comments and, above all, she made sure to give us information to reassure us at every stage of the visit: meeting point, timetable, tourist information and all with a sense of humour. At the start, everything we saw was just as perfect: a smiling welcome, precise information.

Trains and rack railway

Leave behind the hustle of the city of Barcelona as you head towards the serene beauty of spiritual Montserrat, the magical mountain range of Catalonia. Begin your trip in your comfortable coach from the meeting point to the foot of the mountain, at which point you will board a cogwheel train, ascending the mountain steadily until you hit a height of just a little over 4,000 ft, traversing the natural cement and sandstone rocks of the mountain and enjoying the majestic views as you go along before arriving at the Monastery.

Basilica of Montserrat

Visit the Basilica of Montserrat, which houses the Virgin of Montserrat, who was the patron saint of Catalonia. You can also admire from a distance the famous 12th-century Romanesque carving of the Verge Moreneta, better known as the Black Madonna. The treasures within the monastery are almost as breathtaking as the views from it.

You will then be given some free time to visit the audio-visual exhibition about the creation of Montserrat and its rich history, as well as get to taste the typical liquors of the mountain, handmade at the monastery itself. Depending on the time you arrive, you may get to enjoy the beautiful performance by the Escolania of Montserrat, the children’s choir at the sanctuary.

What to bring

  • It is recommended to wear comfortable clothes along with comfortable shoes as the tour involves a fair amount of walking.

What's not allowed

  • Strict dress code: It is mandatory to cover shoulders and knees for both men and women. Flipflops aren't allowed.

  • Shutterbugs, take note: Flash photography is a no-go inside the basilica.

Accessibility

  • The majority of the Monastery complex is accessible to guests with disabilities but wheelchair users won’t be able to get right up to the Black Madonna.

  • During booking, the time slot you select is for your timed entrance to visit Black Madonna. All other parts of your visit can be done at your own pace.

  • Choir performance times may vary in accordance with special religious celebrations and the school calendar.
