14th-century ruins, rebuilt as the majestic Sforza Castle
Nestled amidst the vibrant city of Milan, a short stroll from the iconic Duomo, lies the majestic Sforza Castle. This 15th-century beauty rose from the ruins of a medieval fortress, rebuilt by and named after the city's then-lord, Francesco Sforza. The Sforza Castle is a grand square with four towering corner guards, each side stretching 200 meters, and walls thick up to 7 meters. Since the 20th century, Sforza Castle has become a haven of art, housing collections from revered Renaissance painters. As you explore with your friendly guide and a small group, keep an eye out for The Filarete Tower's octagonal base and decorative terracotta ornamentation, rich brickwork, and captivating mosaics.
Michelangelo’s final sculpture and Da Vinci’s intricate frescoes
The Sforza castle is home to Michelangelo's "Rondanini Pietà" – his last unfinished masterpiece made when he was 89 years old. You’ll also get to see the "Sala delle Asse", a room frescoed by the iconic Leonardo da Vinci, creating the illusion of a leafy forest cascading down the walls, onto the floor. If you’re a history geek, dive into the Museum of Antiques and Archeology, and many more displays showcasing 15th-century artifacts. Be sure to visit the peaceful Ducal Courtyard, which offers a quiet respite after exploring the Sforza castle. For weary sightseers, Sempione Park awaits just behind the castle with blooming flowers and a charming lake.
