Pro tips to help you make a pick

Consider renting an audio guide or joining a guided tour for richer context, as exhibit signage can be limited.

Photography is not permitted in certain galleries, especially the Tutankhamun Mask room—check signage before snapping photos.

Wear comfortable shoes, as the museum’s galleries are extensive and involve plenty of walking.

Lockers are available outside for large bags and food, as these items are not allowed inside the museum.

Bring a valid ID if you’re a student or senior to take advantage of available discounts.

Did you know?

The Egyptian Museum was inaugurated in 1902 and is the oldest archaeological museum in the Middle East.

It houses the world’s largest collection of Pharaonic antiquities, with over 120,000 items on display.

The museum’s star attraction, Tutankhamun’s golden mask, is made of 11 kilograms of solid gold and inlaid with semi-precious stones.

The Narmer Palette, one of the oldest royal artifacts in existence (c. 3100 BC), is displayed here and marks the unification of Upper and Lower Egypt.

Despite the opening of new museums in Cairo, the Egyptian Museum still retains many unique artifacts not found anywhere else, including colossal statues and original royal sarcophagi.

It was a smooth and timely pickup to GEM by our driver who was very kind and helpful. He waited with us in the airconditioned car while we waited for our guide. We skipped the line and then our guide took us for coffee inside once we went into GEM. We had a history lesson while having coffee to make us aware of certain aspects regarding the exhibitions, including how the ancient Egyptians every decision was influenced by religion. It was an absolutely amazing visit with the museum and its exhibits are a must see for everyone. A world class sight and worth a visit to Egypt to see in conjunction with the magnificent pyramids!

Perfect solution for 1 day trip from Hurghada by plane. A few hours to see the Pyramids and eat in the restaurant near the Pyramids. Then carry on your day at the Grand Egyptian Museum for a few hours. Lots to see at the museum.

In Giza, I used the new entrance. It was a good decision. Then I used electric buses, getting off at several stops to take photos. Buses are a very good idea. They run frequently and are user-friendly. Older people don't get tired while sightseeing.

It was my childhood dream and wish to visit the pyramids and words are not enough to describe the feeling and experience I had fulfilling my dream. The experience of entering the pyramid of Kufu was ethereal. The crowd was big but it was expected and well managed.

Me and friend thoroughly enjoyed the crystal dinner cruise . The meal, the setting, the boat and welcome was top class. The entertainment was more exciting to watch especially the whirling dervish was brilliant. Food was the best i had in Egypt with as much as you like for your fill. Thankyou to the staff, cooks, servers, captain, musicians, entertainers and all who made this a memorable evening. It didn't seem long enough on the lovely Nile

Museum is spectacular. Khufu boat is our favourite object. All well organized except for lockers which are located before the entrance and poorly marked.

Great museum. It's getting on in years, but it has its own unique charm. Online tickets worked perfectly.
